Tall ship strikes bridge in Florida

A replica of Magellan's famed carrack Trinidad has collided with a bridge at the harbour entrance at St. Augustine, Florida. The 90-foot tall ship Nao Trinidad is faithful to the dimensions and rigging of the Portuguese explorer’s flagship, which took part in the first expedition ever to circle the globe.

The recreated vessel was built in 2017-18 from iroko wood planks and a fibreglass outer sheath. Fortunately no significant damage or injuries have been reported. The vessel will be in port in St. Augustine until late November and you can book a tour of the vessel.

The Bridge of Lions which was struck is itself a piece of history, having been renovated in 2010. It opens on the hour to allow tall traffic through, but it’s not known how the accident happened.
