The FT reports that as global trade shifts away from China shipowners are prompted to favour mid-sized container vessels over ultra-large ones. By 2025, 83 ships sized between 12,000 and 16,999 TEUs are expected to be delivered, compared to only six vessels exceeding 17,000 TEUs. Environmental regulations, regional trade diversification, and disruptions like Red Sea attacks are driving demand for smaller, more flexible ships. Mid-sized vessels are better suited for adapting to evolving supply chains across Asia. Experts suggest that shifting manufacturing to countries like India and Vietnam makes filling ultra-large ships less economically viable, highlighting a trend towards increased agility within the shipping industry.
